What Is An EP?
An EP is an Exercise Physiologist.
An EP or Exercise Physiologist is a trained & qualified allied health professional who prescribes, delivers, adapts & evaluates exercise & physical activity programs across the whole health spectrum — from healthy people to those with chronic, complex conditions, injuries, or disabilities.
An AEP is an “Accredited Exercise Physiologist” university-qualified allied health professional accredited by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA).
What does an exercise physiologist do?
- Screen, assess & measure capacity & function (physical, physiological, functional) to inform safe exercise interventions.
- Design individualised exercise and movement programs for prevention, treatment, and management of health conditions.
- Help people improve or maintain function, quality of life, recovery & independence.
- Provide education, behaviour change support, lifestyle advice, coaching & self-management tools.
An exercise physiologist is unable to:
- Diagnose medical conditions: AEPs do not diagnose injuries or diseases. This gor a GP, specialist or physiotherapist. They can assess, screen, monitor, but not diagnose.
- Prescribe medication, or perform invasive medical interventions or surgery.
- Manual therapy (massage, manipulation, adjustments) unless they have separate training/certification.
- Provide nutritional therapy beyond general advice within national guidelines. They can give advice aligned with nutrition guidelines, but not advanced nutritional intervention.
- Operate outside their competence: AEPs must refer to or collaborate with other health professionals when a client’s needs are outside their own skills/knowledge.
